Why was the widow of Zarephath asked to give bread to Elijah first?
From the little, when she gives, there is more trust in the provider than the provisions. If she had had enough, I'm sure she would be rather looking down into the jar for oil and flour everyday rather than looking up.
In our surplous, we tend to forget God. That is man's nature to put your trust in the actuals in contrast to the abstracts. But trust helps us to realize that God's presence is not abstract at all. It helps us to feel the actuality of God, that God is so near.
So let us pray that God wouldn't bless us with surplus that we would forget Him, but just enough so that we would put our trust in Him rather
Pro:30:8b-9
Give me neither poverty nor riches
Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.
For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, 'who is the Lord?'
And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God's holy name.
