By faith he was commenced as a righteous man Heb:11:4 Abel learned to offer the right sacrifice according to the standards of God. Bloodshed was needed for forgiveness of sin, according to God. He knew just that, because he wanted genuine forgiveness and reinstation. He believed that by offering a pleasing sacrifice, he could gain God's favour and forgiveness and reinstation. And that was counted to him as righteousness. Where as Cain brought some things which he thought was good. Probably out of compulsion, or out of peer pressure. If he was genuine, he would have sought and found out what would please God. There was superficiality instead of genuinety in it. Because Abel believed and he was seeking God from his heart, out of his desperation to reinstate and bring back his relation with God, it was counted as Abel's righteousness.
