Atonement - a reparation. An act of repairing or keeping in repair  A reconciliation act. A solution for the consequence. To make amends. Something that you do to show that you are sorry for something bad that you did  Expiation. 2Chron:29:24 The priests then killed the goats as a sin offering and sprinkled their blood on the altar to make atonement for the sins of all Israel. In the Old Testament times - a young bull was offered as a sin offering. And as an atonement of your sins, the blood was sprinkled. Lev:4 A day of atonement was set aside each year - tenth day of the seventh month. But all these are acts done by the offending party as an act of repentance. He went after them. Please dont quarrel about this. It is all done. It is all finished.  The same message we see on the cross. It is finished. Do not fret. Do not worry. Do not sin. It is all done. In the Old testament, it is the outward expression of sins and their just punishments described. But in reality we understand through the New testament, a sin in your heart, ie with a wrong motive is considered as sin at par with those physical expressions.
