Rehoboam's decision to be a harder Taskmaster to the people of Israel than his father, triggered a revolt response in the people. They proclaimed their estrangement and disloyalty to David's dynasty. And because of their disaffection they follow a further evil in Jeroboam.
When life doesn't take you through the smooth path, when things are going tough, what does it trigger? To question God? To rebel against Him? Equivocal to God, making you cling on to something else which is of lesser value yet more harmful? How does it trigger a response in you?
God is not like Rehoboam. He is love everlasting.
God works all things for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose Rom:8:28
Will you continue to cling on.
