First give the Lord His share


After the battle with the Midianites, while dividing the plunder amongst them, it was instructed to Moses and Eleazar to tell the Israelites to first give the Lord His share of the plunder.
Does God need money? Isn't the whole world His? Why should you give money to the church? People will misuse it.
It is an instruction that the Lord has given. To give His share- though the earth is fully His.

1 Cor:4:7 What do you have that God hasn't given you?
So giving is not making your church look richer. Giving is not making your temple more magnificent and pompous and gaudy. Giving is out of gratitude of what you have received. Out of indebtness of what you have received you give, be it for the needy or for the spread of the Word. That's why Jesus said the widow had put in more. With an attitude of gratitude she gave.
When we think of giving we often constrain ourselves in thinking of money alone. Equally important (or even more I would say) is TIME.
What is the fraction of time in a day you spend with Him? Half an hour I found out is 2% or 1 in 50 of the everyday time I've got. Sometimes we rush through our quiet times in want of time. I have even done my quiet time standing in less than a minute (even skippped certain days) because I was late. How often have I conveniently skipped my talking to God?
We have made it a ritual. We have time for everything else.
We forsake our sleep for watching a movie, but not for prayer.
And then wake up late with groggy eyes. And skip our quiet time.
We are tired of the day's toil. We gobble up our food and rush to bed. And skip our quiet time.
What about energy /talents/life? Do I use it for God in its prime?
Or do I wait for retirement?
Giving money is not an alternative excuse for you not to work for His kingdom. Using your life for His glory at its peak is what pleases Him more.
It all comes naturally when I have that attitude of gratitude.

Secondly the instruction is "first" give the Lord. Giving to God should be the first thing that crosses our mind when we receive.
Time - early morning when you are most fresh.
Money - First thing when you salary comes
Life- at your young age.
You will not lose on anything. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added into you.

Thirdly - Later we see the generals and captains  coming to Moses and acknowledging that none of them are missing. And out of their thankfulness they voluntarily give all the gold they captured.
Everything is His. Everything is His gift. Nothing is ours. And when we realize that we are just stewards and not owners, we voluntarily give every bit of it.
Time - we won't restrict our relation with Him to that half an hour. We want to know Him more. We spend more time.
Money - we are not hesitant to give to that brother in need.
Life - whatever stage you are now, wherever you are, our desire is to be spent more for Him. Not to live in a utopian ideology.
Assets (including children) - we do not cling on to them and cherish them for our fantasies. But release them to be used for God.

May God enable us to give Him His share first

One more chance

Karun Nair, Indian cricketer was unduly kept away from Indian cricket team. Though he scored runs in international and domestic circuit. This was a viral post of his in 2022. After which he scored piles of runs in domestic circuit and in the IPL. Finally he was given a chance to represent team India again. Inspiring stuff. Give it one more chance. Lk:13:6 Jesus the intercessory keeps on asking for one more chance for you. Those that do not bear fruit are expected to be cut down. V:5 reaffirms by saying - No and I tell you again and again that unless you repent you will perish too. Sin is not something which a holy God can accommodate with. Bearing fruit is what you think as a higher level of Christianity. But not bearing fruit is actually sin. Because that is the purpose of the plant. Why? - a short story

I have always been obedient to my father. Though sometimes it sounded illogical. Of late his demands are more irrational. I have seen him spending time praying. But now he is different. He travels around Judea and sometimes even to Israel to listen to this man Jesus. Some say He is a rebel. Some say He is the son of God the Messiah. I don't know. I haven't been religious. I like this part of the Ten Commandments which says if you want a long life, then honour your father and mother.  Ever since my mother passed away, my father had been lonely. They were in love. Never have I seen anyone love like this, even the newly weds. He had been gloomy for the past ten years. But now there is a smile in his face. He spends time in his room often, praying. Other times he is out to listen to this man. But there is joy in his face, that I know.  Today why did he ask me to go and collect water from the town? No idea. There are slave girls to do that. Neighbour

Luke:10:29 Who is my neighbour? Through the story Jesus' answer to this question was very explicit.  Everyone is your neighbour. Anyone who is in need is your neighbour. Anyone who is spiritually, emotionally, physically in need, you should be fully available. Do you cross over to the other side? Showing you did not see. Are the other responsibilities standing in your way. Or are you freely available  Selling out yourself, your time, your energy, your money. Are you a good neighbour?

Pray

Ask and shall be given to you. Seek and you shall find. Knock and the door shall be opened to you. Luke 11:9 Pray. And that's it. The Father who loves you, won't He give what is best for you. Just like an earthly father wants to give the best for his child. Wouldn't the Heavenly Father do much more? Then why wouldn't we ask, seek and knock? Because we think we are self sufficient. We think we are comfortable in the way we are. It's because of pride that we are lazy to ask.  So just pray. Pray aloud. Pray silently. Pray with others. Pray alone. Pray without ceasing. How do I know whether I am a disciple or a follower?

Luke 14:33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything, he cannot be my disciple. Discipleship and following are different. Anyone can be a follower. But a disciple, prioritises. For a follower, it is convenience. He may or may not. He will join the meeting online, if the situations are cordial, with camera switched off and then do other things simultaneously as well. A disciple listens with intend, takes note, rerevises it, desiring to practise it. A follower is irregularly irregular in attendance. A disciple longs and plans to listen to the word. A follower may or may not obey, depending on convenience. A disciple's only option is to obey. Why do you pursue Jesus? Is it as if He is the only way to meaningful and purposeful living?
