1 John:3:1
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God.
We were not good people; when we were loved. We were not mediocre okay people when we were called children of God. It was not a promotion from good to better. We were terrible sinners; wretched rebels when He first loved us. That is why; empty as we were; love has been lavished upon us.
Unconditionally without limits, He loved us. His justice, His holiness, His truthfulness, His righteousness - unchanging. But love had to be lavished upon us to salvage us.
There was no need for Him to make us children. He could have made us secondary citizens or servants to angels in heaven. That in itself would have been redemption. Because we deserved only eternal hell. But He made us children. Seated us in heavenly realms. Children we were, borne of God. We walked away. He made us children yet again. This is love lavished upon us.
The cross is the reason for our salvation and our redemption. True. But love is the reason behind the cross.
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one
Bring many sons to glory.

O the deep deep love of Jesus
Vast, unmeasured, boundless free
Rolling as a mighty ocean
In its full ess over me
Underneath me, all around me
Is the currant of Thy love
Leading onwards, leading homeward
To Thy glorious rest above.
