The message that John the Baptist had to tell then, is relevant even now. In fact this is the whole message which the Bible has to say right through the history of mankind.
Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the kingdom of Heaven is near. Matt:3:2
There is no other message which is so relevant now. Resounding through the history. God has been yearning for man to come back, for that is his destiny. God knows that, for He is the One who formed man. But man in his limited understanding squandered that first of all. Now God is giving him a second chance.
Lest he loses this opportunity again, he shall be doomed forever. God doesn't want that to happen of his signet ring. Choosing people right through out the Bible, the plan was this. Not random. Not as rewards. Noah, Abraham, Israel, David - through them the Redeemer would come. So that man would be reinstated with Him.
The prophets cry the same. The psalms proclaim the same. The Son of God, His message was also the same. There is no other consistent invocation, congruent plea that we read in all books of the Bible. The harmony of this book is this.
And this is not to the chosen nation, Israel alone that He cries. Israel was just a means for God to communicate to the others. Israel wasn't special or holy so that they were chosen. For God doesn't show favouritism. He could have chosen even the Midianites or the Amalekites or the Cretans or the Americans or the Indians. Yet through Israel, salvation would would be gifted to mankind though not deserving. Israel was chosen out of grace not out of their merits.
Dear one, repentance has to be a daily affair of reinstation with God. Not a one time event, that happened some time back in your life. Fallen as we are, in our thoughts, in our words, in our deeds, in our very being, we need the Holy Spirit's guidance to know we are wrong and come back to the life giving water. Otherwise we waste away.
