But it wasn't that always.
It is celebrated in rememberance of St. Valentine, marking his day of execution. Other legends connecting cupid and early spring love birds and all are there. But this is probably the most authentic.
On his farewell letter to the jailor's daughter, whose eye sight Valentine had restored earlier, he wrote.....
Your Valentine.
Valentine was executed because he was the one who conducted marriages for Christian soldiers (who were not allowed to by the Roman government)
So Feb 14 is love always. It also depicts suffering. It also depicts hope. It also depicts strength (the word meaning of Valentine)
No love is relevant without sacrifice. Without hope. Without strength.
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
